Gardening with Anna
If I had a TV show, it would probably NOT be about gardening. I’m a total rookie. Like a 4-year-old learning to fly, I’m beginning to learn about gardening. In rural Alaska. Some might equate it to wrestling a shark or raising a baby armadillo. Same thing, right?
Last year, I took a pick axe to the excavated tundra that surrounds our house. For those non-Alaskans, tundra is about a foot of thick, spongy, mossy, rooty, fluffy non earthy vegetation. Rip that up on our lot and you get a nice rocky clay soil. Perfect for gardening. Enter sarcasm. The pick axe took some aggression out and helped me pick out the rocks. One by one. Hour by hour. I slowly cleared a 4′ X 6′ spot I called my garden. I threw in some ash and wood chips in mid-June and decided to plant some lettuce, spinach and kale.
VOILA! Fresh greens!
This year, I’ve doubled the size of the garden with another 10 hours of pick axing and shoveling rocks out, sifting through each inch of soil with my hands several times over. I’ve hand tilled in some mulch, pig manured soil and compost. Love that whiff of piggy poo as I mixed it. Cough. Cough. I’m confident I’m still growing more rocks than plants in the garden, but hopefully a few seeds will be triumphant and grow.
With love I planted: Cabbage, Spinach, Arugula, Mixed Greens, Lettuce, Kale, Spinach, Carrots and Sugar Snap Peas! And I’ve given it instructions to GROW! Maybe I should add please. I’m risking it by planting a little earlier than tradition because the nights are still cold and a frost is sure to still come. Guess we’ll see what happens!
