Rural Alaskan Profile #29

You might live in rural Alaska if …. your church parking lot looks like this. Or any parking lot in the village for that matter.  Don’t be fooled by the number of Honda’s (4-wheeler) in the picture. A family of 5 can easily fit on one. No there are no car seats for babies.  You hold them.  And a 4-year-old drove me to church last week.

How do you deal with the rain, mud, snow, cold, wind, dust tornado’s from a plane taking off when riding on them?  Well… that’s what makes Alaskans tough.

You might live in rural Alaska if your mud room looks like this…

Mud room, you say? Come again? It’s as important to an Alaskan home as air-conditioning is if you live in Florida.  Every home must have a mud room and every public building must have a GIANT mud room for all the communities boots and coats.  It’s also a place where black gloves get lost in the vortex of “community sharing” and you might find your neighbor wearing your boots.

Port Alsworth Turkey Bowl 2011

Thanksgiving morning. -2 degrees. One foot of snow. Touch football.

What? You have to bake a pumpkin pie… bad excuse.  Be there.

Port Alsworth, Alaska Turkey Bowl 2011

Last year, I suggested a flag-football game on Thanksgiving morning, and the Port Alsworth Turkey Bowl was started. And after an announcement at church, it was official.  Micah Ness made a trophy and it became a tradition. About 12 people showed up last year and this year, a different mix of people but 16 braved the sub-zero weather to toss the pig-skin.

Friendly smack-talk was constant, sneaking into huddles, and thank goodness the snow was soft, because it turned into a bit of a tackle game. First team to 5 points wins.  Our team was a bit lop-sided with fewer boys, but we made valiant efforts and were up 4 to 1!

Azad was the star of the game, with a gazillion touchdowns. Lots of great catches and interceptions were made by everyone, but Azad clutched the MVP award for the game.

But despite our 4 to 1 lead, we couldn’t hang on and CJ’s team came back from behind and stole the trophy from us.  GGAAAAHHHH.  It’s twice now that Jon’s team has lost… but he’s not at all bitter about that.

Helen, from New Zealand, on the left was the MVP last year and ads a special spice to the game because she enjoys the traditional American football. You have to come back next year Helen…if only for this game. Seriously.  Autumn is the photographer of these amazing photos and I think she’s the true MVP for standing and watching us play in such cold weather.  It was another fun way to start Thanksgiving and not feel so bad about stuffing myself with pie later.

Lake and Pen Air Sourdough Fly-In

What do you do when you live in the bush of Alaska to celebrate Memorial Day and kick-off the summer?

Have a fly-in!

The 2nd Annual Sourdough Fly-In is the brainchild of the Wilder family of Lake and Pen Air.  Naturally, I jumped at the chance to have a party and plan something.  It was an all community affair and extended to the Anchorage, Kenai, Soldotna area with people flying everything from Super Cubs to a King Air.

We had a 5K run, a band, a BBQ, field games and a flying competition.

It was a blast and more than 300 people turned out for the festivities!

Harvest Party

There’s something so great about an opportunity to dress up, win candy, eat chili, and gather as a community.  A good majority of Port Alsworth gathered at the school for the annual Harvest Party.  I think we have a pretty creative group of people!

Lyle-The Grinch, Micah-William Wallace or Braveheart, CJ-Publisher Clearinghouse, Autum-Robot

Of course Jon had to outdo everyone and come as a tree-house.  A TREE-HOUSE?!  Seriously, Jon.  How did you steal all of the creative DNA in our family?!

He wowed the judges, the children, the others who thought they had a chance of winning.  He took the big win for guy’s creative costumes.  Autumn won as Port Alsworth’s cutest robot.

Sherry & I went as… you guessed it… bongo drums BINOCULARS!  Only in Alaska…

Fun times!

Community 5K

Did someone just announce a community 5K? So exciting!

After arriving here and hitting the runways and trails with my trusty old Asics, I’ve wanted to plan a 5K. Luke & Eliza, are the school’s teachers,  track coaches, and avid runners themselves.  They put it on to help their students train.

And of course when someone says community 5K, I immediately think… dress up run!!!  I mean, who doesn’t!?  Heidi provided Sherry & I with our fabulous Tinkerbell and Peter Pan costumes.

In true Alaska style, we got buzzed by Seth, who was bringing hunters back from the field.  Needless to say he was a little confused by all the people at the end of the runway.

The wings definitely helped.

Next on the planning list is a Port Alsworth style triathlon.  Kayak, Bike, Run!
